Linocut print of an Owl. It's based on a stylised illustration that I created. I've had dreams of owls and even saw one in my backyard once. They're one of the most amazing birds, with powerful talons, hearing, and eyesight.

The owl has been represented in mythology in various cultures. Nocturnal birds of prey and owls universally symbolise the powers of night, mystery, and wisdom. In ancient Greece, the owl was a symbol of the goddess Athena. For some Australian First Nations people, the owl is considered to be the sacred spirit of women.

I took a photograph of this bike in Hepburn Springs, Victoria, Australia. I really loved the light coming through the fences and the spokes of the bike. I then worked from the photo to create a hand-carved linocut print. It was quite difficult to carve with all the spokes and shape of the bike.

The Story Behind the Artwork: This original hand-carved linocut print captures the magnificent, dramatic blooming of the Jacaranda tree (Jacaranda mimosifolia). My studio practice is heavily anchored in the 20th-century Japanese Sōsaku-Hanga ("creative prints") movement, alongside the historic legacies of celebrated Australian printmakers Margaret Preston and Barbara Hanrahan and the profound aesthetic of master printmaker Un'ichi Hiratsuka. By honouring this creative philosophy—where the artist maintains total control over every stage, from initial sketch to hand-inking and hand-pulling the print on a manual press—the final artwork carries a distinct, human character. Because I ink and press each sheet individually by hand, no two impressions are completely identical. Each limited-edition run carries its own unique soul, ink density, and subtle variations that digital prints simply cannot replicate.

This is a linocut print of a Black Cockatoo with Banksia tree.

This is a linocut print is taken from a photo and drawing I created of an Australian Black Cockatoo with Banksias. Printmaking and linocut printing is one of my favourite mediums to work with. I'm inspired by working with line, texture and tone and the slow methodical way of hand carving the block prior to printing. The printing of the lino block is another art in itself, each print is unique and has a certain character.

Some of my main influences include the Australian printmakers: Margret Preston and Barbara Hanrahan and the Japanese printmaker: Un'ichi Hiratsuka and the Sōsaku-hanga woodblock print movement ("creative prints") from the 20thC.

I'm inspired by patterns and lines especially the work of Australian artists Reg Mombassa and Ken Done and the late Indigenous artists Ginger Riley. I love the simple line work and naive style of these artists.

My work explores the simplification and interpretation of various forms predominately the natural environment. With an emphasis on colour, pattern and light the painted works explore the notion of a fusion between representation and abstraction.

I'm also interested in the therapeutic aspect of art and the way colour influences our emotions and internal states.

My painting is influenced by Mid-Century Modernism, especially the work of Paul Klee.

I have been told that my painting has a uniquely Australian style - however, I'm not sure what that is, but I'm very much influenced by Sidney Nolan, Fred Williams, Reg Mombassa and the late indigenous artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye.
