Illustrations for Sherlock Holmes

A Study in Scarlet book cover illusutration and inside page

I was thrilled to be commissioned by Stephen Hipkiss of Hipkiss Publishing to illustrate the reprint of Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet. This project was more than a professional opportunity; it was a journey into the shadows of Victorian London, where frock coats and gaslit streets set the stage for a tale of intrigue and murder. My aim was to breathe new life into this classic, offering readers a fresh visual interpretation while honouring its historical and literary roots.

For the cover design, I embraced a striking two-colour palette of black and red. The scarlet hue, a nod to the story’s title and themes, appears prominently in Sherlock Holmes’ jacket and the magnifying glass—a subtle symbol of his investigative prowess and the central murder mystery. Using hand-drawn pencil and ink techniques, I sought to evoke a handcrafted, boutique aesthetic, perfectly complementing the premium print quality of this edition. The result is a bold yet elegant design, true to the spirit of the story.

Research played a pivotal role in this project. Immersing myself in the social and cultural aspects of the 1880s, I was captivated by the intricacies of Victorian fashion and its ability to convey character. Holmes’ iconic image was reimagined with authenticity, drawing from Doyle’s original descriptions rather than familiar adaptations. I aimed to showcase not only his sharp, calculating mind but also the warmth and compassion of his companion, Dr. John Watson. Together, their camaraderie and subtle exchanges of brotherhood were brought to life against a backdrop of foggy London streets.

The back cover illustration was designed to be more than a visual complement; it tells its own story, offering readers an emotional connection to the world of Holmes and Watson. Each element of the design serves as a bridge, connecting modern readers to the timeless appeal of Victorian literature. My goal was to transport them to an era that continues to fascinate, inviting both devoted fans and newcomers to lose themselves in the pages of this iconic mystery.

I’m honoured that the artwork and layout for this edition of A Study in Scarlet have been shortlisted for the Creative Pool Annual 2024 award. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of Sherlock Holmes and the power of imaginative storytelling.
