The Challenge: Balancing Strict Civic Compliance with Approachable Clarity
When Knox City Council approached me to design a compact, portable Child Safety Help Card alongside a suite of public-facing awareness posters, the stakes were incredibly high. The project needed to equip contractors, volunteers, and multilingual council staff with immediate, actionable reference tools for children's safety education, awareness, and advocacy.
The primary hurdle was navigating a deeply sensitive subject without resorting to clinical or frightening visual language. The content explicitly detailed heavy reporting pathways—including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse disclosures. My challenge was to translate these critical, dense policy metrics into plain-language, neurodiversity-friendly visual messaging that supported staff across diverse literacy levels and cultural backgrounds.
Furthermore, from a technical standpoint, the visual system had to strictly comply with the Victorian Child Safe Standards and adhere to rigorous accessibility guidelines (WCAG) for high-contrast visibility and informed colour contrast, all while respecting Knox's corporate branding parameters.
The Solution: An Inclusive, Multi-Faceted Public Information System
Operating as a trusted, senior off-site art department in Melbourne, I took the brief from initial concept sketches through to print-ready master layouts. To eliminate the cold, institutional feel of a standard compliance document, I built an original character illustration style that felt warm, supportive, and empowering.
For the centrepiece of the campaign—the pocket-sized, six-sided fold-out Help Card—I engineered a clean, logical spatial map that breaks down complex organisational frameworks into digestible, chronological phases: Recognise the Signs, Respond, and Report. I designed custom, context-appropriate vector icons to anchor each face, utilising a friendly but authoritative palette that maximised contrast without cluttering the compact 85mm x 55mm visual space.
I then successfully scaled this visual language across a cohesive suite of large-format A3 community posters. By treating the layout with clear geometric zoning, distinct colour blocking, and precise typographic hierarchy, the final posters provide an intuitive public roadmap for civic responsibility and helpline access.
By bridging the gap between tactile, human-centred illustration and rigorous, compliance-driven graphic production, I delivered a flawless, production-ready system to the council. The assets arrive perfectly formatted to industry standards, guaranteeing absolute clarity for the local community and a risk-free file handover for the municipal print manufacturer.
