White-cheeked Honeyeaters
About the Artwork | Limited Edition Linocut Print
This hand-carved linocut print features the White-cheeked Honeyeater, a native Australian bird often found darting through gum blossoms along the east coast and southwest corner of Australia.
In this piece, I wanted to capture the contrast between the delicate, feathery texture of the birds and the bold, graphic shapes of the flowering gums. The design includes five large gum flowers with detailed bottlebrush stamens, surrounded by small gumnuts and pointed leaves. By using a mix of thick lines and very fine detail, I’ve tried to recreate the "beautiful chaos" you see in the Australian bush.
I love the look of traditional relief printing. By carving away the background, the natural paper makes the flowers stand out against the darker ink. Because I print every piece by hand in my studio, each one is a unique work of Australian bird art.
Inspiration & Process
My style is heavily influenced by the bold lines of 20th-century Japanese woodblock prints and iconic Australian artists like Margaret Preston and Barbara Hanrahan.
Printmaking is a slow, tactile process. I spend many hours designing and hand-carving the block before I even touch the ink. This results in a handmade quality that digital prints just can't replicate. When you buy a print, you are getting a limited-edition piece of art that I have personally pulled from the block.
