Melbourne Tram | Limited Edition Linocut Print

$130.00

The Story Behind the Artwork Celebrate the nostalgic, rhythmic soul of the city with this original hand-carved linocut print of a vintage Melbourne tram. Based on my own street photography and location sketches, this artwork captures the timeless architectural charm and constant movement that defines Melbourne’s iconic urban streetscapes.

The W-class tram is more than just a transit system; it is a moving monument to our cultural history and city lifestyle. In this composition, I wanted to harness the bold, graphic language of traditional relief printmaking to translate the structural lines and classic silhouette of the tramcar into a heavily textured work of fine art. The immense contrast between the rich, velvety ink and the delicate, organic tone of the paper highlights the unique colour, pattern, and character of the city. It is designed to bring a piece of Melbourne’s rich urban heritage into the modern home, serving as a meaningful statement piece or a thoughtful Melbourne-made gift for ex-pats and locals alike.

The Hand-Carved Printmaking Process Printmaking is a slow, deeply methodical, and intensely tactile craft—a true labour of love. Every artwork begins life as a detailed ink illustration in my Melbourne studio before spending many hours being meticulously hand-carved into the linoleum block.

My studio practice is heavily anchored in the 20th-century Japanese Sōsaku-Hanga ("creative prints") movement, alongside the historic legacies of celebrated Australian printmakers Margaret Preston and Barbara Hanrahan. By honouring this creative philosophy—where the artist maintains total control over every stage, from initial sketch to hand-inking and hand-pulling the print on a manual press—the resulting artwork carries an authentic, human character. Because I press each piece individually, no two impressions are completely identical. Each limited-edition run carries its own unique soul, ink density, and subtle variations that digital prints simply cannot replicate.
