The Story Behind the Print
This limited-edition linocut captures the striking, soulful presence of the Australian Black Cockatoo, set against the rugged texture of native Banksia tree seed pods. In the Australian bush, there is a beautiful, raw symbiosis between native birds and local flora; watching these heavy-billed birds rhythmically tear into woody banksia cones is a mesmerizing sight. This original artwork is a celebration of that native harmony.
By focusing heavily on line, texture, and tone, I’ve sought to translate the glossy density of the cockatoo’s plumage and the weathered, tactile surface of the banksia into the bold graphic language of relief printmaking.
Printmaking is a slow, deeply methodical labor of love. Each piece begins as a detailed illustration in my Melbourne studio before spending hours being meticulously hand-carved into the block. Because I ink and press every print individually by hand on the press, no two pieces are identical. I am a freelance illustrator, graphic artist, and printmaker located in Melbourne, Australia. With a passion for drawing and a creative background rooted in traditional artisan craftsmanship, I draw constant inspiration from the rich details of the natural world and urban environments. From time to time, I step away from the digital screen to transform my botanical and bird illustrations into original, hand-pulled linocut prints.
Artistic Influences
My creative anchors rest in the rich legacies of relief printmaking. I am deeply inspired by the modernist, graphic strength of Australian printmakers Margaret Preston and Barbara Hanrahan, who beautifully captured the identity of local flora and fauna. Alongside them, I draw from Japanese master Un'ichi Hiratsuka and the 20th-century Sōsaku-Hanga ("creative prints") movement. Crucial to the Sōsaku-Hanga philosophy is the artist's total control over the entire process—designing, carving, and printing oneself—ensuring that each artwork is imbued with a timeless, artisan character.
