Dr Frankenstein and Elizabeth | Limited Edition Gothic Art Print
The Story Behind the Illustration This limited-edition fine art print is a haunting, cinematic look into the dark romantic world of Mary Shelley’s literary masterpiece, Frankenstein. I was proudly commissioned by independent literary house Hipkiss Publishing to conceptualise and create a bespoke series of interior illustrations for a premium, collector's hardback reprint of this classic gothic horror story.
This specific composition captures the psychological tension and tragic elegance of Victor Frankenstein and his doomed love, Elizabeth Lavenza. Stripping the scene back to a highly atmospheric, dramatic palette, the artwork explores the profound themes of creation, isolation, and regret. As a professional book illustrator and graphic artist, my objective was to honour the original 1818 text while providing a fresh, contemporary aesthetic that speaks directly to modern book collectors, gothic horror enthusiasts, and fine art lovers alike.
The Creative Philosophy & Printing Process My illustrative style is heavily shaped by early 20th-century modernism and the powerful emotional resonance of graphic line art. Rather than attempting a literal, photographic rendering, I rely on bold linework, stark contrasts, and intricate textures to evoke the intense psychological climate of the narrative.
To preserve the fine details of the original ink drawings, each piece is reproduced using the highest professional-grade standards:
Premium Paper Stock: Museum Cotton Rag (300 gsm). This is a 100% cotton, heavyweight archival paper featuring a velvety, smooth matte surface. It is exceptionally durable to everyday handling and free from artificial acid or chemical brighteners.
Giclée Printing Technology: Produced as a museum-grade Giclée print utilising premium archival pigment inks. This specialized coating system guarantees incredibly deep, rich blacks and high tonal stability, ensuring the striking monochrome design remains lightfast for a lifetime.
Exclusive Edition: Strictly limited, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Every order comes complete with a signed Certificate of Authenticity documenting your print's edition number and archival studio specifications.
