Golden Banksias | Limited Edition Linocut Print

$190.00

The Story Behind the Artwork: Bring the raw, architectural elegance of the Australian bush into your interior layout with this original hand-carved linocut print. Taken directly from detailed studio studies of iconic Australian native plants, "Golden Banksias" captures the dense, serrated leaves and heavy, cylindrical flower cones of the beloved Banksia chrysocephala (Golden Banksia) in various stages of life.

The banksia is a spectacular symbol of the rugged Australian wilderness—uniquely textured, enduring, and filled with graphic complexity. In this composition, I wanted to harness the bold language of traditional relief printmaking to translate the intricate, serrated layers of the foliage and the woody seed cones into a deeply textured work of fine art. The immense contrast between the rich ink and the warm, organic tone of the sustainable paper highlights the individual character of each stem. This limited-edition piece makes an exceptional Australian botanical statement piece or a thoughtful Melbourne-made gift for expats, gardeners, and print collectors alike.

The Hand-Carved Printmaking Process & Influences: Printmaking is a slow, deeply methodical, and intensely tactile craft—a true labour of love. Every artwork begins life as an intricate ink illustration in my Melbourne studio before spending many hours being meticulously hand-carved into the linoleum block.

My studio practice draws deep creative inspiration from the rich historical legacy of celebrated Australian printmakers like Margaret Preston and Barbara Hanrahan, who beautifully championed the graphic power of local flora. I am also profoundly influenced by the aesthetic of 20th-century Japanese master woodblock artist Un'ichi Hiratsuka and the pioneering philosophy of the Sōsaku-Hanga ("creative prints") movement. By honouring this hands-on tradition—where the artist maintains total creative control over every stage, from initial sketch to hand-inking and hand-pulling the print on a manual press—each sheet carries its own unique soul, ink density, and subtle texture variations that digital prints simply cannot replicate.
