Jerusalem Rooftops illustration
This is an illustration based on a photograph I took from the ramparts walk around the old city of Jerusalem in April 2019. We all went on a family holiday to Greece and Israel, which included visits to museums, galleries, and archaeological sites and just wandering around, soaking up the atmosphere of these ancient cities. We were so lucky to be able to go away before COVID-19 hit.
Even though the tensions in Jerusalem are palpable, history and architecture are astounding. Jewish, Roman, Byzantine, early Muslim, Christian crusader, Ayyubid and Mamluk Muslim, Ottoman, and modern powers have all left their mark on this ancient city.
