Jacaranda | Limited Edition Linocut Print
The Story Behind the Artwork: This original hand-carved linocut print captures the magnificent, dramatic blooming of the Jacaranda tree (Jacaranda mimosifolia). While not native, the Jacaranda has become a deeply cherished part of the Australian urban landscape, signalling the arrival of late spring and early summer with its breathtaking canopy of purple and lilac blossoms.
In this composition, I wanted to explore the striking contrast between the tree's intricate, delicate elements. Using traditional relief printmaking techniques, I hand-carved fine, sweeping lines to mimic the heavy, cloud-like clusters of bell-shaped flowers, juxtaposed against the highly detailed, fern-like fronds of the foliage. The result is a bold, graphic celebration of one of the most vibrant seasons in Australia.
The Hand-Carved Printmaking Process. By relying on the pure language of line, texture, and tone, this monochrome linocut strips away colour to focus entirely on form. The negative space carved out of the block allows the premium, organic tone of the paper to become an active element, giving the exploding floral clusters a luminous, brilliant quality against the rich, dark ink.
Printmaking is a slow, deeply methodical, and tactile craft. Every artwork begins as a detailed illustration in my Melbourne studio before spending many hours being meticulously hand-carved into the linoleum block.
My studio practice is heavily inspired by the 20th-century Japanese Sōsaku-Hanga ("creative prints") movement, alongside the historic legacies of celebrated Australian printmakers Margaret Preston and Barbara Hanrahan. By honouring this philosophy—where the artist takes total creative control over the designing, carving, and hand-pulling of each print—the resulting artwork carries a human, artisanal character that digital prints simply cannot replicate.
