Wattlebird with a Bottle Brush Tree | Limited Edition Linocut Print

The Artwork & Story

This original linocut print features the boisterous, iconic Australian Wattlebird nestled amidst the architectural, textured blooms of a native Bottlebrush tree (Callistemon). As a Melbourne-based artist and printmaker, the familiar, sharp calls of these native honeyeaters and the vibrant bursts of backyard bottlebrush are a constant source of creative inspiration.

In this piece, I wanted to capture the "methodical chaos" of the bottlebrush stamen. I used fine, deeply hand-carved lines to create a delicate, exploding texture that directly contrasts with the strong, graphic silhouette and bold markings of the Wattlebird. The resulting relief print balances raw wildlife energy with clean, contemporary Australian design.

The Studio & Printmaking Process

Every handmade print in my studio is the result of a slow, highly tactile journey. Long before ink meets paper, hours are spent observing wildlife, sketching from life, and meticulously hand-carving the linoleum block.

My printmaking philosophy is heavily rooted in the 20th-century Japanese Sōsaku-Hanga ("creative prints") movement, which dictates that the artist must handle every step—from design and carving to pulling the print on the press. Because each piece in this limited edition is hand-inked and individually hand-pulled, you are receiving a completely unique impression featuring its own distinct character, depth, and texture.
