Behind the Scenes: Bringing Oz 2 to Life
Working on Oz 2, the second book in Hope Swan's reimagining of The Wizard of Oz, was an incredible journey. Hope and I had a shared vision: an Oz stripped of its charm, a world plunged into shadows under Marcus's oppressive rule.
To capture this bleakness, I leaned heavily on a grayscale palette. Every line, every stroke of the pen, aimed to depict a world on the brink, a place where hope flickered against a backdrop of despair.
Delia and the Rebels: A Spark of Hope
At the heart of this dark world are Delia and her rebel crew. Swept into Oz by a freak storm, Delia becomes the unlikely leader of a resistance movement. Hope's writing brought these characters to life – their resilience, their determination to reclaim their home, it was truly inspiring. My illustrations aimed to capture their bravery, their struggle against overwhelming odds. These rebels are the beating heart of a story about survival, rebellion, and the enduring power of hope.
A Timeless, Otherworldly Feel
For the internal illustrations, I focused on a timeless, otherworldly feel. Grayscale allowed me to play with light and shadow, creating a sense of both familiarity and eerie strangeness. The goal was to evoke the nostalgia of the classic Oz while grounding readers in this darker, more dangerous reality.
A Fiery Cover Design
The cover design had to reflect the intensity of this war-torn Oz. At its core is a fiery ring, symbolizing the chaos and destruction that have engulfed the land. This ring draws the eye to the bold title "OZ," rendered in a metallic texture to convey the strength and resilience of those fighting for survival.
Beneath the flames, the iconic yellow brick road lies fractured, worn down by the struggles of those who dare to traverse it. The interplay of light and dark, the fiery ring against the shadows, creates a sense of both danger and a flicker of hope.
