Long-Form Book Series Illustration & Technical Layout — Oz 2: One Wizard's Carnage

The Challenge: Evolving a Dystopian World

Returning to the world created by author Hope Swan, the objective for Oz 2 was to deepen the visual narrative of an Oz under siege. The challenge was to maintain the "desolate grayscale" aesthetic established in the first book while escalating the stakes—visualising a "war-torn Oz" featuring bombed cities, prison alcoves, and a more battle-hardened rebel crew. The visual language needed to feel "timeless and otherworldly" while grounding the high-stakes drama of Hope's contemporary reimagining.

The Solution: Sustained Narrative Consistency

I delivered a comprehensive suite of internal grayscale illustrations and a high-impact "Fiery" cover design. By utilising a tactile ink-and-pen style, I played with high-contrast light and shadow to heighten the sense of danger and rebellion. My role as an off-site art department extended beyond drawing; I managed the technical layout for the full-wrap cover (including spine and back-cover integration) and ensured all internal assets were optimised for Amazon KDP and premium print-on-demand standards. This sustained collaboration demonstrates my ability to manage the visual continuity of a multi-book series, providing the author with a turnkey creative solution from first sketch to final publication.

Step Into This New Oz

I hope this glimpse behind the scenes has given you a taste of the world we created for Oz 2. It's a story of courage, resistance, and the enduring power of hope in the face of overwhelming odds.

Oz 2 is set to be released in January 2025. You can find it on Amazon by searching for "Oz - One Wizard's Carnage."
