Dystopian Book Illustration & Cover Design — The Wizard of Oz Reimagined

Book cover illustration and design

The Challenge: Decolourising a Technicolour Icon

Collaborating with author Hope Swan, the objective was to visualise a contemporary, dystopian interpretation of The Wizard of Oz. The core challenge was to "suck the magic out" of a world traditionally known for its vibrant Technicolour and replace it with a gritty, oppressive regime under a ruthless dictator. This required a total tonal shift—transforming the whimsical Yellow Brick Road into a faded memory and creating a visual landscape that felt "hauntingly familiar yet strikingly different."

The Solution: A Grayscale Narrative of Rebellion

I developed a series of internal grayscale illustrations to evoke a sense of timeless desolation and resilience. Using a tactile mix of pencils, pens, and ink, I focused on the "Analogue Soul" of the rebellion, contrasting the bleakness of the world with the sharp, determined silhouettes of the rebel crew. For the cover, I strategically reintroduced "Emerald City Green" as a visual portal, creating a high-impact contrast that invites readers into this reimagined world. My role as an off-site art department ensured that the illustrations functioned as a strategic immersion tool, bridging the gap between classic literature and modern dystopian fiction.
